U-Pick
What To Bring
Dress for the weather. While we often have cool breezes off Lake Erie, blueberry picking is a summer experience.
Bring
- sunscreen
- hat
- sensible shoes (you could encounter uneven ground or heavy dew.)
- some people bring containers to put the berries in for the ride home.
What We Supply
- Pails with bag liners are provided for picking and weighing the berries.
- Drinks and snacks are for sale at our store near the farm entrance.
- Flush toilets and sinks for wash-up are near the store area.
- We have Interac at the store
How to Pick
Our berry guides will provide you with containers and show you where to pick. Bushes are picked 6 times per season, about one week between picks. Therefore it is best to pick all the ripe blue berries on a bush before proceeding to the next bush. This technique is used by our professional pickers because it fills pails faster and reduces wastage.
Hold your hand under a berry cluster palm up and roll the berries into your hand with the thumb and forefinger.
Rules of the Field
- No backpacks, coolers, diaper bags, etc allowed in the field.
- Children must be supervised. No berry throwing or running around in the field.
- Dogs must always be on a leash. No dogs are allowed into the field.
- Respect other customers and our guides. Everyone wants a positive experience.
Storing and Freezing Blueberries
Refrigerate blueberries in an air-tight container and wash just before using them. Blueberries are perishable at room temperature but will keep up to two weeks if dry and refrigerated.
Blueberries are easy to freeze. Generally, blueberries are not washed before freezing. Pack blueberries in plastic bags or containers and remove as much air as possible. Do not add sugar when freezing as it breaks down the fruit. Label and date each package and enjoy them year round. Frozen blueberries can be used in pancakes, pies, muffins, sauces, jams, etc. See recipe page.
One option is to wash berries before freezing, but then they must be laid out on a towel to dry, then spread one layer deep on a baking tray to freeze, then bag. This prevents the blueberries freezing together in a clump.
Rinse and drain frozen and fresh blueberries just before using.
